Thursday, December 20, 2001 Funday: My friend Boots is a font fanatic. Seriously. Her archenemy is a toss-up between Times New Roman and Courier New. She introduced me to fontface, which is not only nifty but free. Check it. And in case updating falls to the wayside over break, happy holidays to my 5 or so readers out there. . . NY pitas: I look forward to sharing numerous martinis with ya when I get home. And until next time, beware the yulelog-- or any other simulated fireplace, burning through your television screen.
Tuesday, December 18, 2001 More spiked cider, please! Yesterday we went to Uncommon Ground to see our friend Rob go acoustic for their open mic night. I like that place.
And here is a picture of the Beagle(since removed) on the scoot outside our apartment. We had just bought our small baby Christmas tree, the Beagle holding onto it and me as I drove us home. It felt very European. So we just wanted to capture the moment.
Monday, December 17, 2001 This link is for my friend Ange. Because we both had crushes on this poetry-writing skater punk. Once, after Feature Writing class, I almost (read: really wanted to but was too bashful) invited him over for my uber-college meal of fishsticks and peas. How romantic. But then I chickened out. And Ange had his poem taped up on her fridge for, like, an entire semester of Creative Writing. Am I wrong, GC? Friday, December 14, 2001 Poster boy: Open invitation for all Chicago pita readers to share a cider with me and the Beagle tonight at the Ten Cat. We'll be there around 8. Can you find the owl on your one dollar bill?
Thursday, December 13, 2001 Meta-lady: this librarian rocks.
A quote for today: "It is sad that the air is the only thing we share. No matter how close we get to each other, there is always the air between us. It is also nice that we share the air. No matter how far apart we are, the air links us." --Yoko Ono '67 Tuesday, December 11, 2001 : Caroline and I decided to give my dad a sheep for Christmas this year. Really, what do you get for the guy that has everything? Okay. So he doesn't get the actual sheep. . .this organization vows to sent an animal of your choice to an indigenous family somewhere in the world. Maybe it's a crock, but I couldn't resist the wooly goodness of the animal-gift. Speaking of crocks, if you are going to give to charity this year, check out the Better Business Bureau's charity reports index to see how your bucks are being spent. Monday, December 10, 2001 Blinkety blinker: The Beagle and I got back on the condo horse this weekend. See, we have this thing about our place: we must first wreck it in order to fix it up. Usually that involves chisels, crow bars and major dust bunnies. This weekend we upgraded to a Sawzall. We took out part of the wall that goes from the dining area into the kitchen. Dirty fun brings joy into homeownership. Friday, December 7, 2001 Lookitup: That annoying "learn, learn, learn" whisper is back and so I signed up to take a liberal arts course through worky work. The class starts in January and is all about the Bible. It will be interesting to read it as literature, seperate from the guilt-inducing doctrine it produces. Thursday, December 6, 2001 Vamp: outside the box: Oh the things that make me giggle. What could be more amusing than a redneck vampire unironically singing "suck my dong"? He must not know too many lady fangs. Wednesday, December 5, 2001 Animal crackers me up: Something seems wrong about putting a sweater on a dog, period. But a sweater that is trimmed in fur is just creepy. Aaah, the Onion. Thanks for making me crack up week after week and thanks to Megh for sharing. The following story is from the December 2001 issue, available online at theonion.com. This story is too good for a good Polish girl like myself not to post: Polish Rapper Under Fire For Use Of The Word 'Polack' DETROIT— MC Krakow, a popular Detroit-based rapper of Polish descent, came under fire Tuesday for his use of the word 'Polack' on his new album World Warsaw III. "When MC Krakow casually uses the P-word, it dredges up decades of hurtful portrayals and cruel jokes for our people," said Sandy Serwacki, president of the Polish Anti-Defamation Society. "In just the song 'Ten-Inch Pierogie' alone, he uses the word 27 times." In an official statement, MC Krakow defended his use of the word: "When I say, 'Y'all be my Polacks,' or 'Yo, what up, Polack?,' it's my way of taking the word back. Our people need to re-claim and embrace 'Polack' with pride, just like Eminem did with the word 'faggot.'" My sister just got laid off. I'm not going to mention the name of the shite TV station she worked for Much less Entertain Thoughts of Ripping them a new One. Suffice to say, they're like the ChannelOne of adult TV. Tuesday, December 4, 2001 Giftlog pita fruitcake: I giggle because both Boots and my sister used the pita to buy me presents! Presents rock! Now if only the parental units could use web technology so that I wouldn't be at such a loss for their Christmas gifts. Monday, December 3, 2001 White noise: Paul keeps sending me goofy sound clips from some "learn English" site. Check 'em in IE: silent hearts & swimwear.
B-day suit: Yesterday I turned twenty-six. Hard to believe. I found myself asking the Beagle, "why did I do when I was twenty-two? twenty three?" because I don't really remember. Time is a funny thing. Anyway, yesterday Beags and I went to Facets Cinematheque and saw Jung (War)In the Land of the Mujaheddin, which details pre-9/11 conditions in Afghanistan, the sorry state of medical care there, and the story of outsiders opening a hospital for war victims. It was gritty stuff, birthday realism. Overall it made me wish I was a doctor and that blood and guts weren't so creepy. Helping people find books just isn't the same as saving lives.
Later in the evening, we met up with D&J at this rather civilized jazz bar called Pops, and ate oodles of chocolate fondue. J. and I laughed ourselves silly over 'losing the rams' and 'where are the sheep?' for reasons now lost. To top it off, the kids gave us this coolio engagement present because of our penchant for appetizer making and I found myself saying "ho ho ho, green giant" repeatedly. Friday, November 30, 2001 Skeleton, choking, bread crust: While looking for a lipstick case (they remind me of grandmas, but I love 'em) I found these little cases, which make my Catholic school-girl kneesocks look much sexier. Slayer hump day: Buffy the Vampire Slayer is the best show out there, hands down. The past couple of epidsodes have been rather, umm, titillating as well. This Salon article gives a nice psychological perspective to it. Happy Birthday to my friend Heather!!! Everyone should check out her site and wish her a happy day, at least in your mind. Having never known or met him, the main thing I'll remember about George Harrison has little to do with the Beatles. It's his "Got My Mind Set On You" video. I really loved those singing animals. Thursday, November 29, 2001 Scared witless: Okay, not really. But this article puts a funny ha-ha spin on the Boogeyman. Wednesday, November 28, 2001 Ok, there is some news to tell, giving reasons behind my purposeful evasiveness last week. The word on the street is that the Beagle and I got engaged. Pita updating fell to the wayside as I found it rather difficult to write much without spilling some personal beans. We wanted to revel a while before letting the family know, and didn't tell them until Thanksgiving. Now that's its out in the open, I've created a FAQ:
For those who I told via e-mail and still felt they needed to hear my voice lest I be "getting all jokey" with them can be comforted. It's true. Yips! PizzaSquirrel is back! And converted, as well. I hope he bakes cookies: Dear pita, I haven't been ignoring you. It's just that I've been really busy. I swear I'll write more later. lv, stacy Wednesday, November 21, 2001 Exciting things abound but I cannot make a peep about them. Damn! The suspense is killing me. No difference. The truth will be out soon enough, and then I'll update this little lovin' spoonful of pita. Until then, here is some lib-reading. Thought I would go a little autumn-ish with the color schema. And, as usual, link ya to the archive. Get me in that turkey mood. |
